Serious writers need serious editing help.
You've found it.
The Excellent Edit.
It takes more than a good idea or a way with words to publish a book or essay. It takes a really good editor. Someone with a keen eye for detail; an expansive knowledge of what makes writing, arc, plot and characters work; an ability to square what the author intended with what they put on the page — and how best to take it to where it needs to go. And, of course, years of experience helping serious writers like you find satisfaction and success.
With The Excellent Editâ„ — my unique approach to editing fiction and nonfiction — I bring all of the above to bear on your project, whether it's a novel, memoir, short story, essay, academic book, blog post or magazine article.

How does it work?
Upon completion of my edits, I write an editorial assessment letter touching upon the below aspects of your project (where applicable) and, as necessary, other important items. Finally, should you have any questions, additional phone conversations and email exchanges with me are included at no additional charge (within reason, of course!)
As a result, my fees — your investment — are very competitively priced.
In addition to The Excellent Edit, I'm experienced in providing other valuable services to writers. These include:
- Edit nonfiction proposals
- Assist with the writing and revision of compelling query letters and synopses to agents and publishers
- Guide self-publishers through the process
- Provide one-on-one consulting on all types of writing
I have more than 20 years of experience editing the work of both successful and aspiring writers, and have taught writing to college students, short story writers, nonfiction authors, and novelists, both in the classroom and online. [See the Testimonials page]
As a writer, I have published three novels: Redeeming Eve (2000), What Matters Most (2006), and The Happiness Thief (2021). Redeeming Eve was nominated for both the Hemingway Foundation/PEN award and the Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize for Fiction. The Happiness Thief was a Foreword Indie Awards finalist, and was described as a “compulsively readable mystery and character study” by Kirkus. My new novel, Will End in Fire, is to be published in October 2024. With a PhD in Modern British Literature from New York University, I am also the author of a book on novelist Margaret Drabble. I have written essays for several publications, including The New York Times, Parents, and The Forward.
